HATARI TAVERN
Open from morning until late the Hatari Tavern was named after the famous 1960 safari film epic ‘Hatari’, and particularly as the bar was the chosen watering hole of its leading man, John Wayne (or ‘Duke’ as he was known to his friends). A relaxing and chilled bar perfect for cocktails at sundown, coffee over lunch or after dinner cognacs with an all day menu offering light snacks and meals. 

THE LOUNGE
‘The most well-known meeting place in Arusha’. With high back chairs and leather sofas, the lounge is frequented by residents of Arusha, as well as visitors enjoying coffee and chatting throughout the day and evening.

BUSTANI BAR
Located next to the swimming pool the Bustani Bar serves drinks, light snacks and meals throughout the day ensuring our guests do not have to interrupt their leisure time.

The hotel revolves very much around the garden – it is the focal point from most angles.

Lantern posts light a labyrinth of paths through the grounds, and an old set of brick steps lead down to the lower garden. Its relative secrecy lends itself perfectly for private, special candlelight functions, under an awning chosen to accommodate your specific numbers.

Pool, Gym & Holistic Spa
Tall trees shade the large outdoor swimming pool, children’s pool and open air jacuzzi where you can cool down and relax in the midst of the splendid, African garden. The more energetic can either swim lengths or take full advantage of the extensive and fully equipped, high tech gym, which is fully air-conditioned and located alongside the pool area.

In addition in 2010 they will be launching their exclusive and luxurious Holistic Spa which is in the process of being developed to offer the best in natural treatments and remedies for mind, body and spirit.

In addition to the therapies the Holistic Spa will also be providing a ‘Health Bar’ where guests can choose from a selection of specially made smoothies, health snack and salads.

Airport Transfers: They are able to arrange airport transfers between The Arusha Hotel and Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Domestic Airport.

Business Centre: Located on the Lower Ground Floor. It is open Mon-Sat from 8am to 8pm and Sun from 10am to 8pm and offers a wide range of secretarial services.

Curio Shop: An emporium of locally made crafts as well as a selection of sweets, chocolates and other essentials.

Golf: Located 5 minutes from the hotel by taxi, The Arusha Gymkhana Club is a great place for golf enthusiasts with a nine hole golf course with a pro, caddies and clubs for hire.

Msumbi Coffee Shop: Situated adjacent to the lounge and serving a range of coffee using the finest Tanzanian coffee beans.

Swala Gem Traders: Certified gemologists Eric and Mark Saul have a family history in gem stone expertise; their father was the first geologist on the tanzanite deposits in 1967 and he introduced tanzanite to Tiffany’s in New York in the late 60s. At Swala Gem Traders, his sons are carrying over a similar passion for tanzanite and other gemstones. They have a large selection of stones in their shop and Eric is the Ambassador to Tanzania for the International Colored Gemstone Association which means he can issue a certificate of authenticity with the ICA stamp for your gemstone.

WI-FI: Wireless internet is available throughout the hotel and its grounds. Vouchers can be purchased through reception.

Events
 Throughout the year The Arusha Hotel plays host to a number of events including St. Valentine’s Day, Easter Family Fun Day, Thanksgiving and the biggest event of the calendar, the New Years Eve Ball. Alongside these special one-off events guests can enjoy the monthly Cheese & Wine Club and for those looking for something healthy the holistic days in the gardens are perfect.

History
1894.
The Arusha Hotel set precedence for hotel accommodation in the new and undeveloped town of Arusha, when first built back in 1894. It was the time of horse drawn buggies and classic cars, which took a beating on the unpaved roads and tracks.

The hotel signified a pleasant resting place for those traveling from as far as the Cape or Cairo …. and all corners of Old East Africa. Its status soon became synonymous with travelers, pioneers and adventurers looking for welcoming accommodation or refreshment stop during long grueling journeys into the outback.

1927.
This year marked a cornerstone in The Arusha Hotel’s history, when American Ohio Banker and personal friend of Teddy Roosevelt, Kenyon Painter, bought and made extensive changes to the property, sealing its reputation as Arusha towns first and foremost hotel. Its grand opening in December 1927 saw the Prince of Wales as guest of honor and over the years became the chosen resting place for many a famous guest including Baron Von Blixen of ‘Out of Africa’ fame and John Wayne during the filming of ‘Hatari’.

Today
In very recent years The Arusha Hotel has welcomed many high-profile guests including President Clinton with The Clinton Foundation, pop star Shaggy, Miriam Makeba, South Africa’s singing legend also known as ‘Mama Africa’, Hollywood icons Will & Jada Smith and actress Jessica Biel.
