‘Shumata’ is a Maasai name and it means ‘heaven’ or above the clouds! Shu’mata Camp is the sister camp of Hatari Lodge. It has large tents, in true Hemingway’s style, which form a line on a hill with magnificent views in all directions. At the front of the camp bush savannah melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa, so close that on a moonlit night details of the glaciers can be visible. Shu’mata’s style is a fusion of the last millennium combined with Tanzania’s natural fabrics and bright Maasai colors. Hatari Lodge is a comfortable and scenic three-hour drive away; guests are taken through their “private Amboseli” to enjoy an exclusive bush experience as an add-on to their stay at the Hatari Lodge.
Location The camp is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in the traditional Maasai land, in an area known as Private Amboseli. Accommodation There are five comfortable safari tents in the true Hemingway’s style. Three more are in progress and due to be finished by mid 2011. All have en-suite bathrooms with flushing toilet and open air shower with running water decorated colorfully with Maasai art. Each tent has its own veranda with breathtaking views for miles and miles of the African vastness. All tents have big panoramic tent windows with gauze, overlooking the private Amboseli plains, the seven sisters and Kilimanjaro. Each guest tent is spacious and can be used as a single, double or triple unit.Equipped with a dressing table, a Hemingway style hanging cupboard, bedside tray stands and a nostalgic lockable trunk for personal belongings create an atmosphere of the safari life of the 1920s. Dining The Mess Tent is a tribute to the African elephants and is divided into three different design sections representing a safari through time: from Vintage to Safari Baroque to Arabian nights with huge cushions for the perfect spot to relax while outside under the open sky a fireplace adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance. A Hemingway whiskey blends in perfectly with the sound of crickets, barking zebra and the distant roar of a hyena.
Art Shu’mata’s style is a fusion of the last millennium combined with Tanzania’s natural fabrics and bright Maasai colors. The interior cloth and linen are designed by Marlies and handmade in Arusha and by the women of the Mama Momella project which is part of the Momella Foundation. Game Walks & Night Game Drives Game walks & Night Game Drives must be booked in advance. Creativity for Sustainability The Momella Foundation was founded by its coordinators, Marlies and Jörg Gabriel, the proprietors of Hatari Lodge in Momella and Shu’mata Camp in the Maasai Steppe. They created the Momella Foundation in order to give back to the community from which they derive their passion, love and livelihood. The Momella Foundation is a non-profit organization seeking to aid the region through various creative programs.
Under its umbrella there are currently 7 individual projects that include educational development, sustainable agronomy, waste disposal, natural resource cultivation and protection, as well as a community center. These are set up in order to develop the region and uplift local living conditions. The foundation’s aim is to attack poverty at its roots. Thereby the principal goal is sustainability.
