| RHINO LODGE - NGORONGORO CRATER - TANZANIA |
Rhino Lodge is a relatively new and incredibly unique property which offers something quite refreshing within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It opened in September 2007, and rather than being a luxury lodge for tourists it is actually a very simple lodge with a great atmosphere intended mainly at promoting local tourism. The main lodge is built with solid stone walls which are a muted green on the exterior and white-washed on the inside. The floors are highly polished stone and the furniture is simple comfortable sofas or wooden tables and directors' chairs.
At all times, international visitors can only occupy half of the lodge and the rest is reserved for Tanzanian citizens. The lodge was built in conjunction with the local community and has the ideology for making the Crater accessible to those who might not usually be able to stay in any of the other lodges in the area.
Location
The Rhino Lodge is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and a few hundred meters from the crater rim. It offers quality and affordable accommodation in a spectacular setting. Its location is very convenient, being the first lodge as one enters the Ngorongoro Conservation Area from Arusha.
Getting There
Ngorongoro is a 45 minutes drive from Manyara and 3 hours from Arusha town. Flights are available to Arusha and Manyara daily from both Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. Guests can also fly-in, on Coastal, from other parts of the country: Selous, Ruaha, Serengeti and Mwanza.
Accommodation
The 24 rooms at Rhino Lodge are all situated in a terraced row, around an outside courtyard. Each of the rooms is able to accommodate two people, with an optional third bed. The rooms have tiled floors, white washed walls, simple furniture, and en suite bathrooms, with a hot shower. Each room has its own verandah where guests can relax and be absorbed in the dense green forest surroundings of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Activities
At the lodge, guests - including self driving guests - can hire a 4WD car for game drives into the crater. Walking safaris with Maasai rangers are possible. Guests may also take part in daily cultural activities by visiting the Maasai ‘bomas’ in the local communities of the Conservation Area.
