Pemba Island - Sail Boat
PEMBA ISLAND

Pemba is an island redolent with the heady aroma of spices, as much of the land is covered with spice trees. There are numerous ruins, some dating back to the 13th century, worth exploring on Pemba. Resident wildlife includes the Pemba puddle frog and the Pemba flying fox (an endemic fruit bat). The northernmost Island of the Zanzibar archipelago off Tanzania, Pemba Island is still the world's major clove producer, but has now slipped into its more traditional role of being an Island holiday destination. The coral reefs off Pemba Island offer spectacular snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving.

Less popular than its larger neighbor to the south (Zanzibar), Pemba is more remote but as a result offers some of the best unexplored coral reefs and marine life in the world.

Facilities are less developed on Pemba, but the beautiful beaches, historical attractions and spectacular scuba diving and snorkeling are well worth the trip!

KERVAN SARAY BEACH LODGE

In the far north of Pemba, a new concept in adventure and hospitality has been created. After eight years of operating in Chake Chake, the capital of Pemba, 'Swahili Divers' has moved its operation to an idyllic spot on the beach close to the village of Makangale. This resort is called "Kervan Saray Beach". It is the first new hotel to open in Pemba in 8 years.

Kervan Saray Beach (KSB) boasts Pemba's most experienced and competent dive centre. 'Swahili Divers' know the reefs like no one else. Famous for diving the whole of Pemba, they are a PADI 5*. It is an unpretentious dive resort where non divers are made very welcome.

Eco Tourism
Every night that you spend in KSB you make an involuntary donation to the local community of $3. This money is used to develop the local community. The money is used to repair houses, repair schools, give educational courses, provide small scholarships to the local community and provide an "ambulance" service in emergency.

KSB may seem like a hotel, but it is in effect a moving, living, eco friendly development program. Having started in 1999, and been owner-operated since that time, we know where not to invest, and we know where people make mistakes. Kervan Saray Beach was built using coral blocks and paste and grass from the Island of Pemba. The re-enforcing bar came from Dar es Salaam and the paint from Tanga. All of these items came by dhow. The carbon footprint of a dhow is limited to the fire that the crew use to warm their food at night when at sea. Indeed, some of the wooden poles were landed right on the beach. The rest came by bullock cart (and a few trucks) from the nearest town, (Konde).

Now almost all the dry goods, vegetables and beer come by dhow. Water is heated using a bush solar system. Where possible inverters and batteries are used. Solar Electricity is being investigated at this time. Staff walk to work or use bicycles, gas cylinders are moved by ox cart. Where engines are used, they have retrofitted Turbocharged Direct injection Diesel engines to the Landrovers. These engines were imported from Great Britain and come up to the highest European pollution controls. All fast boats have been retrofitted with four stroke engines from the UK that also comply to European emissions controls. KSB is the only dive centre in Pemba that uses 4 stroke engines and the eco-friendly Direct injection engines in their Landrovers.

Rooms
Rooms are exceptionally simple, built using only local materials with thatched roofs. Each room has:
a double bed and a single bed
an attached washroom.
a shower that provides lukewarm water that is solar heated using an African Village system. On cloudy days the water is cool.

Dining
Mzee Ali, is the resident cook who is adept at cooking on charcoal and with the limited resources that Pemba once had. Happily the markets in Pemba are now bustling with fresh produce from the Usambara Mountains on mainland Tanzania. Meat ranges from locally sourced products to imported meat from around the globe. Fish varies from season to season. This is all line caught and dependant upon the luck of our local fishermen. The catch of the day comes by during a surface interval.

Kervan Saray Beach offers you a set four course nightly menu. This includes salads, fruits, desserts, and of course a daily vegetarian option. Please be aware that due to local conditions, some items are seasonal.

Electricity
The resort is so remote that it is off the National Power Grid. Electricity is provided by generator from 6pm to 6 am in the rooms, and in the office during the day. Guests are very welcome to use a large bank of plugs to recharge laptops, satellite phones and digital cameras. Where possible inverters and batteries are used.

Connectivity

There is satellite and radio phones that can be used to call out for the appropriate fee. There is a computer dedicated for guest use, which is connected to Satellite internet. The connection is of medium speed, associated with a VSAT connection. (128KB shared). This is available for use for a small fee.
