| KUNGWE BEACH LODGE - LAKE TANGANYIKA- TANZANIA |
On a long stretch of Lake Tanganyika’s golden sandy shores, beneath the magnificent Mahale Mountains, lies the newly refurbished Kungwe Beach Lodge. The camp consists of 10 spacious and luxurious tents with en suite facilities overlooking the crystal clear waters of Tanganyika.
Whether relaxing in the lavishly furnished lounge, or on a Lazy (Uvivu) chair overlooking the lake, Kungwe Beach Lodge is the perfect place to wind down and reflect on the wonders of your day. A simple stretch on our cushioned beds on the beach with a good book while contemplating your next adventure is always a comfort.
In the evenings, candlelit dinners are served either in the unique dining area or on the beach to the sounds of an uninterrupted cacophony of beetles, crickets and birds and the calls of Chimpanzees in the forest.
Location
The lodge is situated between Kasiha and Sinsiba streams and is built with comfort and luxury in mind.
Activities
Chimpanzee Tracking
Chimpanzee tracking is the main attraction at Mahale, and is always given high priority. Tracking usually begins early in the morning, with the Guides usually starting at the area where the Chimpanzees nested the previous night and tracking from there.
In Mahale tracking can take up to four hours. Chimpanzees move in search of fruit, and are never far away if there’s an abundance of fruit nearby.
They normally go into the forest for Chimpanzee tracking in the morning and come back in time for lunch. In the afternoon there are many options, depending on how energetic you feel. Choose between further Chimpanzee tracking, walking on the beach, swimming, fishing and snorkeling. It is also possible to visit local fishing villages close to the park and get first hand experience of life in a typical African village.
Fishing
An angler's paradise, Mahale is one of the best locations on Lake Tanganyika for fishing. Due to the effective control along the park's borders, there is an abundance of fish in the area. Most of the tourists have a great catch within hours on the lake. Some of the types of species caught are the Sangara (Nile Perch) and Kuhe (Yellow Belly). Fishing boats are provided at the camp, equipped with the basic gear including rods, reels, line, sinkers, lures and hooks available. The boatmen are also experienced in the sport.
